This Saturday, February 4^th join us at 11:30am at VCS New Westminster for a free 30 minute Ring Masters presentation. The Ring Master students will be presenting the solo and group routines that they have been developing as part of their intensive program. Come cheer them on!

Congrats to the Thornton family for winning tickets to Kuru Kuru Pa

The Thornton family won our ‘guess how many balls’ competition this week with a guess of 11,280 yellow balls. They were the closest to the actual total – 9614, and so they have won two tickets to Kuru Kuru Pa! on December 31st as well as a free night at the Inn at the Quay. Congratulations!

New Westminster newspaper The Record has featured an article on the circus school and our upcoming New Year’s gala show ‘Kuru Kuru Pa!” Here is a small selection from the article, be sure to read the full report here.

Maintaining a ratio of six students for each teacher, the school now runs 200 classes each week, helping 500 aspiring trampolinists learn the finer points of the gravity-defying craft.

Just last week Vancouver Circus School was named best small business by the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce, but for the moment, Johnson is singularly focused on Dec. 31.

The show, which has been in heavy rehearsals for the past month, is scheduled to centre around 12 performers taking to the sky with aerial silk, a unicyclist, a yo-yo champion and a manipulation artist who needs to be seen to be believed, according to Johnson.

“He can hold a ring in space and move his body completely around it without moving the ring,” he explained.

The show is called Kuru-Kuru-Pa. Kuru Kuru is a Japanese term meaning to twirl, and by adding “pa” at the end, the phrase means crazy. … Although the Burr Theatre performance won’t be able to match the grandeur of Cirque du Soleil, Johnson said it’s a rare opportunity for New Westminster residents to see a blend of artistry and athleticism up close.

“You’re going to see people do things that you would never see in such an intimate setting,” Johnson said.

Inner Ring performance for Blake, Cassels & Graydon

Last week, the law firm Blake, Cassels & Graydon was entertained by a special performance from the Inner Ring Circus at the Fairmont Waterfront in Vancouver. The show featured giant balloon, ring manipulation, aerial hoop and silks, handstands, pole and more; all performed to the highest standards by this talented group of circus artists. The Vancouver Circus School, in partnership with Inner Ring Circus, is pleased to present the theatrical premiere of Kuru Kuru Pa! on December 31^st in New Westminster. Hosted at the newly-renovated Columbia Theatre, (formerly the Burr Theatre), this New Year’s Eve gala presentation will entertain the young and young at heart!

Kuru Kuru Pa!, a new show conceptualized and directed by circus professional Brandon Miyazaki, features an eclectic troupe of performers orchestrated by a distinguished Ring Master and his derisive Ring Mistress. With the clock ticking down, this seemingly dysfunctional circus troupe indulges its individual egos, with each member continually trying to dominate the stage. The Ring Master and his multitalented troupe of performers will entice their audience into this mad world of aerials, acrobatics, and brain-teasing visuals. All are invited to explore this eccentric circus and to join in its pursuit of a new beginning, a new year!

North Vancouver Student Showcase : December 16th

VCS showcase at the Columbia Theatre – Nov 15th

Last week was the grand opening of the Columbia Theater in New Westminster (formerly the Burr Theatre) and the Vancouver Circus School was there demonstrating skills and taking part in the festivities. Extensive renovations have been underway for several months on the historic building which was built by Famous Players as the Columbia Theatre in 1927.

We will be hosting our 2011 New Years Gala Show at the Columbia Theatre on December 31st.

VCS Winter Camps

The Vancouver Circus School is proud to present the 2011 Winter Camp for ages 6 – 16 in New Westminster. Join us for a week of unique and wonderful circus activities such as Aerial Silks, Trampoline, Trapeze and more. Camps are led by our world-class instructors who ensure every participant goes home safe, happy, and brimming with circus. As a finale, at the end of the week we invite friends and family to come watch a free show featuring our winter camp participants! This winter, give your loved ones a memory they’ll never forget.

Dates: Dec 19th – 23rd 2011 Time: 8:30am – 3:00pm

For our older students, the Ring Masters intensive is a great opportunity to build and refine your skills this winter. This 35-hour program exposes students to the real rigor of circus arts. Students will explore new disciplines not normally offered at Vancouver Circus School, as well as train in the foundation of circus arts. Students will test their limits, feed their passion and build their creativity in a supportive environment. This is a week of unique experiences and character building challenges. A week that will be remembered for a lifetime…
