Celebrating the End of an Amazing 5 Years & the Beginning of a New Decade!

When father and son Aaron and Travis Johnson opened the Vancouver Circus School at the Harry Jerome Recreational Centre in 2005, they never could have dreamed it would turn out to be as successful as it did. People of all ages from the Lower Mainland enrolled in the school’s classes and VCS soon became the little school that could.
Now, moving into a new decade and its 6th year in North Vancouver, Travis and Aaron thank everyone for their support. “There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing our students grow their skills in the circus arts” says Travis. “We have built this school on the foundations of education, creativity and active lifestyles and we couldn’t be more proud to be apart of the amazing North Vancouver Community”.
This year, the Vancouver Circus School will reopen its New Westminster location at a new and improved New West Quay.
Travis and Aaron wish everyone a very happy new year and thank you for your continued support!

Circus School: Good for the Young and Young at Heart
VANCOUVER – With the onset of Winter just around the corner, men and women in Vancouver are looking for fun, different ways to get exercise, that doesn’t involve the boring, same-old, same-old gym routine.
For those considering switching up their fitness plans, or just wanting to do something outside of their normal activities, look no further; the circus has it all.
Circus enthusiasts abroad who’ve learned skills in trampoline, acrobatics, aerial arts, swinging trapeze and more say learning circus arts is not only a great workout which helps build lean muscle mass and stamina; it’s also effective in promoting balance, flexibility and coordination, and spatial awareness-all of which help people in both athletic and every day activities.
A spokeswoman for the Vancouver Circus School says, “we have a lot of dancers and athletes who come to us to help them better their overall core strength and workout routine”.
The Vancouver Circus School, located at the Harry Jerome Recreational Center in the Memorial Gym, on the North Shore, has been running since 2004, offering classes for all ages in aerial silk, acrobatics, swinging trapeze, juggling, trampoline, and more.
Travis Johnson, co-owner of the school says, “While we do have several students who are there to spice up their workout regime, we also have many people who just wanted to try something different. Everyone gets a great exercise and works in a collaborative, group environment”.
For the fist time, the school is offering introductory nights, (just in time for New Years Resolutions!) from January 4th- 8th. Registration starts November 9h, 2009.

The local paper stops by to try out the trapeze

A few weeks back we were featured in the New Westminster newspaper with an article on our classes in New West. Reporter Niki Hope writes:
At a Vancouver performance of a Cirque du Soleil show a few years ago, I saw a breathtaking aerial ballet performance that made the physical act of flowing between silk ribbons look effortless.
The contortionist pulled and streamed her almost naked body along the cherry red ribbon as if gravity didn’t exist.
The out-of-this world theatrical and physical performance was like a moving meditation on womanhood.I now have an even greater appreciation for that Cirque performance after a recent visit to the Vancouver Circus School, which recently opened in New Westminster.
Curling up and lumbering my way into the belly of the silk ribbons, I tried a little aerial ballet myself.
And, I have to admit, it was no meditation – the ribbons are harder to manoeuvre in than they appear and require incredible core strength.
But I did manage – with guidance from circus school owner Aaron Johnson – to hold my body parallel to the floor for a few fleeting seconds. Rocking back and forth, I – almost – felt weightless.
