New Westminster newspaper The Record has featured an article on the circus school and our upcoming New Year’s gala show ‘Kuru Kuru Pa!” Here is a small selection from the article, be sure to read the full report here.

Maintaining a ratio of six students for each teacher, the school now runs 200 classes each week, helping 500 aspiring trampolinists learn the finer points of the gravity-defying craft.

Just last week Vancouver Circus School was named best small business by the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce, but for the moment, Johnson is singularly focused on Dec. 31.

Ever thought about running away and joining the Circus?  In celebration of our 7^th Anniversary, the Vancouver Circus School is pleased to offer a free day of Circus Classes on September 4^th, 2011 at our new location in the River Market at the New Westminster Quay.  This one-day-only free event is open to ages 6 through adult, and includes a variety of classes in circus exploration, aerial silks, trampoline, juggling, trapeze and more!

The Vancouver Circus School is an independent, coach-directed Circus and acrobatic program operating in B.C.’s Lower Mainland. The School offers the opportunity for Lower Mainland residents, young and young at heart, to experience the thrill and excitement of learning the ‘art of circus’ through regular classes and performance opportunities.

The Vancouver Circus School 7^th Anniversary Celebrations take place on September 4^th with a variety of free classes for ages 6 and up.  Limited spaces available; pre-registration is required.

11:00am – 12:00pm (6-10 yrs)

Class: Circus Exploration

12:30pm – 1:30pm (11-14 yrs)

Class: Circus Exploration

2:00pm – 3:00pm (Teen & Adult; Ages 15+)

Choice of: Aerial Silk, Trampoline, Juggling, Acro, or Static Trapeze

3:00pm – 4:00pm (Teen & Adult; Ages 15+)

New video of our head silks coach Meregon showing off her skills on the aerial silks at the Vancouver Circus School in New Westminster! We sat down with Meregon to ask her a few questions about her experiences as an aerial silks coach for the past several years at VCS.

VCS: How long have you been at the Vancouver Circus School?

Meregon: Well, this past September was my 4 year anniversary since becoming a student at the school. I was one of the first adult student that VCS had, and I was also the first student to become an instructor.

VCS: How did you get involved?

Meregon: I was working at a community day event in West Van with Nigel Wakita (a childhood friend.) Travis Johnson had come to the event because he wanted to see a yo-yo performance that Nigel was doing, and he brought along a group of student silk performers who had rigged some silks off a swingset on the beach. That was my first time seeing an aerial silk performance, after the show I got as much info as I could from Travis and then signed up as a student in 2006. After 9months of adult classes, I was invited to do my first proffessional show with Inner Ring Circus, and was later invited to start coaching for the school.

VCS: What are the best parts of being a silks coach?

Meregon: Watching with delight seeing students overcome thier fears and personal barriers (especially the adult students)

VCS: What the ideal qualities that make for a good student?

Meregon: Good silk students need a willingness to challenge themselves and an internal drive to succeed. Our program at VCS is set up to work at the students pace, the students who excel are the students who really want it for themselves.

Have you always wanted to try out some the the circus activities, but aren’t sure if you want to sign up for a 5 week session? In addition to our specialty intro workshops in November, we are also offering “intro to the circus” classes where students can try out silks, trampoline, trapeze, juggling and more for only $10 ($15 for teens and adults)

Intro Classes run every Saturday starting October 30th. An Intro class is 1.5 hours and mixes all the circus skills together in a fun and challenging experience.

This is the perfect chance to expand your range of skills or to get a friend involved in the circus. Intro classes are fun, friendly and no previous experience is required!

Along with the new space in New Westminster comes a variety of new opportunities for teen and adult circus training. We are excited to be offering new one-time workshops in a wide range of circus techniques, as well as the chance to invite some guest instructors into the space. This November we are offering workshops in (click the heading for more info)

Our fantastic New Westminster location is finally open, and circus classes are running in aerial hoop, trapeze, trampoline and aerial silk. Our beautiful new 6000 square foot location is the perfect place to train and develop your skills, nothing beats the view of the tugboats on the river from atop the swinging trapeze!

Our current session is already underway (classes began on October 4^th), and our next session starts November 5^th. Registration for the November classes is open, and there are still spaces available in our current classes so if you want to jump in mid-session, call us at 604-544-5024 to check availability in the current classes.
