Lower Mainland resident inducted into the World Acrobatics Society

In September this year, New Westminster resident Aaron Johnson received a posthumous induction into the “Gallery of Legends”, the World Acrobatics Society highest honor.

Johnson, who passed away in 2012, was well-known to the international gymnastics and trampoline community for his contribution towards the creation of the Trampoline Technical Manual, used nationally as part of the National Coaching Certification program.  Johnson, a long-time resident of New Westminster, was beloved by his community; as a coach he led 18 athletes to medals at the Trampoline World Championships. Johnson was well-known to the Vancouver community, spending over 20 years working with family services of greater Vancouver,  In the late 90s, Johnson took on a unique challenge as Artistic Coach for Cirque Du Soleil’s “Mystere” in Vegas. This experience lead him to be a pioneer in the Vancouver Circus community, where he served as an original co-founder of Cirkids, and later formed the Vancouver Circus School with his son, Travis Johnson.

Johnson’s family was on-hand to receive this prestigious honor, travelling to Florida in September.  His son, Travis Johnson, honored his father with a speech and video presentation.  When asked about the experience, Johnson reflects,

“I am grateful to have had the opportunity to travel to Orlando Florida to accept my late father’s acceptance into the World Acrobatic Societies “Gallery of Legends”.  I was deeply honored to accept this award on my father’s behalf. Joining me was my mother Valerie Johnson and sister Sarah Johnson, both from the New Westminster Queens Park Arenex and Shasta Trampoline Team. It was quite an emotional experience, and accepting on his behalf was a difficult task, but I take great pride in who my father was, and will continue to build his legacy at the Vancouver Circus School.”

This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the Vancouver Circus School, where two programs continue in Aaron Johnson’s honor; The Ring Masters and Circa 51.
